Solar Floating System: the Future of Renewable Energy

The floating PV system is a power generation mechanism that operates on water. It can fully utilize ponds, lakes, reservoirs, and so on, without any negative environmental impact. Floating systems can save valuable land resources and keep the water body covered by solar panels, thereby increasing power efficiency by 8% to 10%.



The floating solar system can be off-grid or on-grid, providing electricity for local populations or enterprises. Even small water areas can be utilized as ideal generation sites. In most cases, the owners of this system will sell excess power to nearby utilities and energy suppliers to recoup some proceeds.

In addition, these solar panels can protect water from direct sunlight exposure, which can inhibit the growth of algae and other harmful microbes. The evaporation resistance is also a benefit in arid regions. With the floating solar PV system, water evaporates more slowly when covered by solar panels than when exposed to sunlight, making this system more attractive for water conservation. Besides, it can also generate revenue from electricity sales.

However, there are also some challenges associated with this device. Considering that all the panels will be exposed to water, all the components (especially the panels' fastening wires) need to be waterproof to prevent corrosion and damage. This requirement results in higher installation and maintenance costs compared to ground systems. Moreover, the threats of storms, hurricanes, and water level changes must be considered, so the installers create a floating design to handle these conditions.

Most of the earth is covered in water, so there are plenty of places to install floating solar systems. Although the floating solar PV system has higher installation costs, its advantages in increasing efficiency, maintaining ecological balance, and providing convenience outweigh its disadvantages.
